What Is LAN (Local Area Network)?
We hear the word LAN very often today. LAN the system of devices (Computers normally) linked to one another on a small level such as in Building, Office, Home etc. You can see different LANs having 2 or 200 computers, depending the needs and requirements of the owner. LAN is designed to share the recourses such as data, software and hardware between computers. If you are having multiple computers connected to each other at home or office then you are actually having a LAN. You can share your files or folders, Printers, Scanners, Disks, and Internet etc with the help of LAN. In this section we will learn how to set up both Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). 1st we will start with simple LAN.
Hardware Requirements for a simple LAN:
The hardware required by your specific LAN can be a little bit different according to requirement of your LAN. Right now as an example we will be working on a LAN where we have 2 computers to be connected to each other. Suppose one is Desktop and one is your Laptop. We want to share the Internet connection that the Desktop computer is using and also we want to share the files and printer too. For this small Network we will need the following Networking Hardware:
CAT5 Cable
Network Card
Hub / Switch
Cable: You need cables for all kinds of wired networks. The recommended cable for LAN is Cat 5 which allows 10-MB or 100-MB communication between the devices. For a normal LAN an RJ-45 jack is required on both ends of the cables that fits into the female connector found at your Ethernet card. RJ-45 jacks are pretty much similar to normal telephone jack but a little bit bigger. I suggest you to buy cables that are ready with RJ-45 jacks connected to them, because otherwise you might have to buy a complete role and prepare everything by yourself that is an extra job.
CAT5 Cable
If you want to do the whole cabling by yourself anyway then for cabling guidance please refer to the Cabling guideline section of the site. Right now assuming that you are having a ready cable we would proceed to the next requirement. Before buying a very long or short cable by mistake, you should 1st measure the distance between the points and then buy the cable according to your requirement. They are available in all lengths. At the right side you can see an image of a normal CAT5 cable with RJ-25 Jack.
